Seating With A View

Settled in 1750, the picturesque town of Mattapoisett was once known as a prominent center for shipbuilding and whaling. In fact, the whaling ship Acushnet was built in Mattapoisett, the ship on which Herman Melville sailed his first seas and was inspired to write his masterpiece Moby Dick. Today there are four beaches, two parks and a quaint village along the town’s waterfront, and where the ocean meets the sky, stands historic landmark Ned’s Point Light. Mattapoisett also is home to Haskell Swamp, in the Tinkham Hill area, and the Nasketucket Bay State Reservation, a state-managed wildlife area, locally known as Nunes Farm.
